Challenge stupid requirements
Today, many people wonder how Musk companies like Tesla and SpaceX can innovate so fast. Musk and other senior executives however have already shared the secret! It’s a 5-step process they call “The Algorithm.” I’m Peter B. Stevens; this is the Agile Minute, and here’s how it works!
The Algorithm
- Step 1: Make requirements less dumb. Perfect requirements can’t exist, so obviously, any requirement could be dumb. Go to the source – the person not the department – and make sure the reason is clear, convincing, and still relevant.
- Step 2: Delete the Part or the Process Step. Anything you can delete will save you time and money. Yes, sometimes you have to add it again later. That’s a sign you’re trying hard enough.
- Step 3: Iterate. Run steps one and two many times. Automating something that is too complex doesn’t fix the problem.
- Step 4: Accelerate. Work expands to fill the time allotted, so allocate less time. You can always go faster than you think. Challenge people and be systematic about eliminating impediments.
- Step 5: Automate. Automating is that last step. Run the first steps of the algorithm many times before you automate.
That is the Algorithm in a nutshell!
